Gorgeous Grab Bars!
|
No one wants their home to look like hospital. (Heck, these days, most hospitals don’t want to look like hospitals, either!)
Part of my mission as an interior designer is to prove that accessible design (and sustainable design) can be beautiful.
Here’s the proof of how handsome “universal design” features can be: gorgeous grab bars! Your grab bar can be just about any length you want and the style and color can definitely add pizzazz to your decor, whether it’s sleek and modern, traditional, or eye-popping post-modern.
For example, Great Grabz makes several lines of handsome grab bars with matching shower baskets, towel racks, toilet paper holders and other coordinated bathroom fittings.
Consider the Great Grabz polished brass bar below. This one is for sale online at PlumbingSupply.com, where the cost ranges from $208 for a 19-inch long bar to $270 for 42-inch-long bar. (This is just one of several handsome options – scroll down to see a jazzy black bar and other design options.)
These gorgeous grab bars are designed to withstand 250 pounds of weight! And they’re made with recycled aluminum materials, for superior environmental responsibility.
The wave design of the grab bar shown at right provides you and yours a distinct advantage – it offers a hand-hold at more than one height, which is better if you need to accommodate persons of different heights and reach ranges. Hardware for these stylish bars is adjustable along the bar, so you can choose from multiple mounting locations.

Features and Benefits:
- ADA compliant when installed properly
- Can hold up to 250 lbs of weight (when mounted according manufacturer’s specifications)
- Ideal for getting in and out of the tub or shower
- Adjustable hardware along the bar – offers multiple mounting locations
- They are available in four designer finishes
- Available in horizontal or wave design – adds style to any decor
- Versatile design allows it to be used as a grab bar, towel bar or toilet paper holder (10″ model)
A full rainbow of color options from another supplier, Brey Krause, is shown below. Want a royal blue grab bar to coordinate with your “chivalry blue” Vetrazzo countertops? No problem!
Brey Krause, a company that has been in business in Pennsylvania since 1909, has a state-of-the-art powder coating facility, capable of adding custom colors to a wide variety of standard and custom products.
Brey-Krause will custom fabricate grab bars to your specifications from 18 gauge (.049) stainless steel tubing. Their bars are available in 1, 1-1/4, and 1- 1/2 inch tube diameters and a wide variety of flange styles, including oval exposed, round exposed, concealed, and oval and round snap-on styles. Brey-Krause can powder coat grab bars in all the colors shown at left below – and even add an anti-microbial coating if you want.

That is great. I love to see design apply to everyday living that is helpful.

Thank you for moving the aesthetics of universal design forward. My other favorite “home spa handrail” is by Kohler.

It blends in seamlessly with existing tile. It is better suited for new construction than a remodel or retrofit. Some construction experts have issue with the design but any product that brings innovation to universal design to increase general consumer acceptance is welcomed.

The grab bar market has really improved from the days of old and now there are several really tasteful choices, colors and styles.
Aside from the options I am already aware of I was surveyed confidentially last week by a major supplier of handicapped showers and walkin bathtubs that I work with on some accessories such as towel shelves, tp holders and towel rings that double up as grab bars. They don’t even look like grab bars and when correctly installed perform exactly as a grab bar should. Wait until you see these…
